Sewing Machines
The Janome 1522 is one of the machines you’ll find in my classes! I love it for beginners because it’s straightforward, sturdy, and doesn’t have a million buttons to overwhelm you. It has everything you actually need to learn the basics and plenty of room to grow with you. If you want a solid mechanical machine without all the extra bells and whistles, this is a great place to start.
The Brother XR9550 is the other machine you may use in class. It’s computerized, lightweight, and has lots of features without being too intimidating to learn. I especially like it for someone who wants a beginner-friendly machine but knows they’ll eventually want to play around with more than just the basics. I, also, love that it has alpha/numeric stitches on it. These are so much to play around with adding labels to your projects.
The Brother CS7000X is my personal sewing machine and the one behind most of the clothes you see me make. It’s easy to use, has all the features I actually need, and has kept up with a LOT of garment sewing. I’m a firm believer that you don’t need the fanciest machine to make really great clothes—and I keep coming back to this one.
These are the tools that I (truly) use each time I sit down to sew, not including the fabric and thread.
These are a few handy dandy tools I use consistently. They aren’t necessary for a beginner, but they sure make life easier.
